Delhi HC stays Somnath Bharti’s Conviction

A single judge bench led by Justice Suresh Kait has suspended the prison term, stayed the conviction, and given notice to the Delhi government on AAP MLA Somnath Bharti’s challenge to his conviction and sentencing of a 2-year jail term in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) security-staff assault case.

The MLA was found guilty and sentenced for assaulting a security-staff of AIIMS in 2016. The High court has adjourned the matter until May 20.[i]


Muslim woman moves SC opposing PIL for uniformity in laws for divorce, maintenance and alimony

A Muslim woman has approached the Supreme Court to oppose the PIL filed by the BJP leader and the Supreme Court Advocate Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay for uniformity in personal laws governing divorce, maintenance, and alimony for Indian citizens.[ii]


Delhi Court issues summons to Chidambaram and his son in INX Media Case

On taking cognizance of the charge sheet filed by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) against former Union minister P Chidambaram, his son Karti P. Chidambaram and 8 others in the INX Media money-laundering case, a Delhi court issued summonses to them.[iii]


Gold Smuggling Case: Kerala HC allows investigations to continue

The Kerala High Court has adjourned the further hearing on a petition filed by an Enforcement Directorate officer challenging the FIR lodged by the Kerala police in the wake of gold smuggling suspect Swapna Suresh’s charges against the Chief Minister.

The ED’s request to stay the investigation was denied. The bench, however, ordered that no punitive measures be taken against the ED official until the next hearing date.[iv]




North Korean businessman appears in US court for violating sanctions

Mun Chol Myong, an accused North Korean intelligence operative, was extradited from Malaysia on money laundering charges and appeared in federal court in Washington, DC. Mun is the first North Korean national extradited to the United States to face charges of breaking US law.[v]

European Union Sanctions Russia over LGBTQ Rights Abuses

The European Union imposed sanctions on two Russians accused of persecuting gay and lesbian people in Chechnya, the bloc’s most severe reaction to attacks on Russian citizens based on their sexuality.

Human rights organisations, the media, and filmmakers have accused Russian officials in the autonomous region of a purge, claiming that dozens of LGBT+ people have been rounded up and tortured since 2017.[vi]

Sri Lanka Airlines sues Airbus

Sri Lankan Airlines has filed a $1 billion lawsuit against Airbus, alleging bribes in connection with an order for six A330s, four A350s, and four more A350s to be rented.[vii]
